Return to the Valley of the Son of WaHi (or, how the festival took a writer back to school)

In one sense, at least, it's easier to get a clear image of Washington High School now than it was 30 years ago. Take a look at front of the 85-year-old brick building from Southeast 12th Avenue, across what used to be the school's athletic field, and you see a proud edifice, dignified in proportion and purpose -- a temple of learning.
