Memoir
My dad lived in St Helens but in 1914 he was expelled from St Helens High for playing basketball in the gym on Saturday. Of course he had broken into the gym in order to play. His father was chairman of the school board and made an example of him. So for his junior and senior years he had to take a river boat to Portland every Sunday and return by boat to St Helens on Friday. He boarded in Portland. I guess this was a good lesson for him because he went on to become a physician and surgeon (Dr. Cecil J. Ross) in Portland for almost 40 years.
